First, I need to say that I thought this book was a rousing good story. Worth the read. That said, I also need to say that I blow hot and cold on Gaiman. Loved Coraline, hated Anansi Boys. So I was really curious when this won the Newbery. The illustrations are divine - very creepy and cool. The story, sort of a mystery about a boy whose family is killed when he is an infant, and he escapes during the murders (toddling as a baby) to a graveyard, where the inhabitants decide to protect him, and which means he has to live his life in the graveyard with the dead. There's witches and ghosts and bad guys and real people and all of that. Most of the story unfolds nicely, as the kid (named Nobody by the dead people) grows up, and little by little learns enough about the living world to want to leave the graveyard. All turns out well in the end, but I think Gaiman fell down at a few spots. First, the explanation of why this kid's family was targeted for murder was kind of lame and artificial, and I don't think he did a stellar job of pulling all the pieces together at the end; almost felt as if he was throwing things in because he forgot about certain threads. Second, there were at least two or three parts where he took too long to get the action going, and the descriptive stuff was, well, sort of boring. Third, there were times when I think he forgot he was writing a mid-range age book, and he started defaulting to really heady vocabulary without defining the words. Fifth, he starts to pull together all the "Jacks" in the story, which come from legend and myth and such, but he never explains the legend or the myth. A kid in south Texas is going to be pretty ignorant of the "Jack Frost" legend, and I don't think that kid is going to be so inclined to research it. I had no clue who "Jack Ketch" was, so even I was at a disadvantage. I had to look it up on Wikipedia. So, I think Gaiman ought to have had a page or two in the back detailing the names and origins. It would have helped immensely, even if you didn't see it until the end. After all, what kid knows anything about the Hounds of God? And I have yet to figure out the significance of the Sleer. If anyone wants to enlighten me, please do. And finally, since I am generally a reader of 'liner notes', I read his acknowledgements, and he mentions someone who helped him flesh out the "themes" of the book. Only, I felt stupid, because I really don't know what those themes are - they weren't obvious. But if this was not just a rousing good story, then what WERE the themes? The possibilities I came up with are - The need for 'family' and how you can't grow without it You can't protect yourself from danger forever Evil exists, love and family are the only defense Redemption is possible even after death Life goes on, except for the dead, and we are the richer for that (or are we?) Fear is in the eye of the beholder We can learn stuff from anyone, even the dead ???? So I'd be happy to hear what everyone else thought the themes were. Much has been made about the choices for the Newbery lately. Since the age range is so wide, I peg this for the upper part of the range, especially for the writing level. Maybe someone will disagree with me. It is, however, certainly a better book than The Higher Power of Lucky. ;-)

قراءة مثيرة للاهتمام ، خاصة وأنني كنت في العديد من الدورات التدريبية التي قدمها مايكل تراوت. مثير جدا للتفكير!
